How we collect, use, and protect your information

MeUp ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service").

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

When you create an account and use MeUp, we collect information that you provide directly:

  • Account Information: Email address, username, password (encrypted), full name, profile picture, and bio
  • Profile Data: Privacy settings, account preferences, and profile customization
  • Event Content: Events you create, including event names, descriptions, dates, times, locations, photos, and GIFs
  • User-Generated Content: Comments, messages, and other content you post or share
  • Group Information: Groups you create or join, including group names, descriptions, and images
  • Social Interactions: Likes, saves, follows, blocks, and other engagement with content

1.2 Information Automatically Collected

When you use the Service, we automatically collect certain information:

  • Usage Data: Features you use, actions you take, and time spent on the app
  • Device Information: Device type, operating system, unique device identifiers
  • Log Data: IP address, access times, app crashes, and performance data
  • Location Data: Location information you provide when creating events (not collected automatically)
  • Push Notification Tokens: Device tokens for sending push notifications (FCM tokens)

1.3 Information from Third Parties

  • Firebase Services: Authentication data, analytics, and crash reports
  • Apple Services: MapKit location data you search for and use in events
  • Giphy: GIF selection data when you search and add GIFs to events

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide the Service: Create and manage your account, enable event creation and discovery, facilitate messaging
  • Personalize Experience: Show relevant events, suggest connections, customize your feed
  • Communication: Send push notifications about likes, comments, messages, follows, and event updates
  • Safety and Security: Detect fraud, prevent abuse, enforce our Terms of Service, investigate violations
  • Improve the Service: Analyze usage patterns, fix bugs, develop new features, conduct research
  • Legal Compliance: Comply with legal obligations, respond to legal requests, protect our rights

3. How We Share Your Information

3.1 With Other Users

  • Public Information: Your username, profile picture, bio, and public events are visible to other users
  • Events: Public events are visible to all followers; group events are visible only to group members
  • Comments and Interactions: Your comments, likes, and event attendance are visible to users who can see the event
  • Private Account Protection: If your account is private, only approved followers see your content

3.2 With Service Providers

We share information with third-party service providers who help us operate the Service:

  • Firebase (Google): Authentication, database (Firestore), cloud storage, push notifications, analytics
  • Apple: MapKit for location search and maps, Push Notification Service
  • Giphy: GIF search and integration
  • Cloudflare: Hosting and content delivery

These providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and use it only for the services they provide to us.

3.3 For Legal Reasons

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to:

  • Legal processes (subpoenas, court orders, search warrants)
  • Law enforcement requests
  • National security requirements
  • Protecting our rights, property, or safety, or that of others
  • Investigating fraud or security issues

3.4 Business Transfers

If MeUp is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

3.5 With Your Consent

We may share your information with other parties when you give us explicit consent to do so.

4. Your Privacy Controls

4.1 Account Settings

  • Private Account: Control who can follow you and see your content
  • Profile Editing: Update or remove profile information at any time
  • Event Visibility: Choose between public events and group-only events
  • Group Privacy: Create public or private groups

4.2 Content Controls

  • Delete Events: Remove events you've created at any time
  • Delete Comments: Remove your comments from events
  • Delete Messages: Delete message threads
  • Block Users: Prevent specific users from seeing your content or contacting you

4.3 Notification Settings

  • Control which push notifications you receive
  • Manage notification preferences in app settings
  • Disable notifications entirely through device settings

5. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service:

  • Account Data: Retained until you delete your account
  • Events and Content: Retained until you delete them or delete your account
  • Messages: Retained until you delete the conversation or delete your account
  • Analytics Data: Aggregated and anonymized data may be retained indefinitely
  • Legal Retention: Some data may be retained longer if required by law or for legal purposes

6. Data Security

We implement reasonable security measures to protect your information:

  • Encryption: Passwords are encrypted; data is encrypted in transit using SSL/TLS
  • Firebase Security: Firebase security rules protect your data at the database level
  • Access Controls: Limited employee access to user data
  • Regular Audits: Security practices reviewed and updated regularly
  • Secure Authentication: Firebase Authentication with industry-standard security

However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information:

7.1 Access and Portability

  • Request a copy of your personal data
  • Export your data in a portable format

7.2 Correction

  • Update or correct inaccurate information
  • Complete incomplete information

7.3 Deletion

  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Request deletion of specific information

7.4 Objection and Restriction

  • Object to processing of your information
  • Request restriction of processing

7.5 Withdraw Consent

  • Withdraw consent for data processing where consent is the legal basis

8. Children's Privacy

MeUp is not intended for children under 13 years of age (or under 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@meup.app, and we will delete that information from our systems.

9. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that are different from the laws of your country.

We use Firebase services, which may store and process data in multiple locations globally. Firebase complies with applicable data protection regulations, including GDPR for European users.

10. California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, and share
  • Delete personal information we have collected
  • Opt-out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell personal information)
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

11. European Privacy Rights

If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have rights under GDPR:

  • Legal basis for processing: Consent, contract performance, legitimate interests
  • Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority
  • Right to object to automated decision-making (we do not use automated decision-making)

The Service may contain links to third-party websites, services, or GIFs. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. We encourage you to read their privacy policies.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:

  • Posting the new Privacy Policy in the app
  • Updating the "Last Updated" date
  • Sending a notification through the app or email

Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
